Planting Fields Arboretum is more than a park; it’s a preserved Gold Coast estate with 400 acres of landscaped gardens, greenhouses, and rolling lawns. Built in the early 1900s by the Coe family, the property feels like stepping into another era. Every corner offers a new texture, color palette, or light quality, making it a dream location for engagement photos throughout the year.

For couples who want their engagement portraits to feel both natural and timeless, this location has everything: historic stone architecture, flower-filled walkways, and the grand façade of Coe Hall serving as a stately backdrop. The grounds are especially stunning from late April through October, when the gardens are in full bloom and the tree-lined paths come alive with color.

After photographing many sessions here, I can confidently say that there’s no single “best” spot. Each section offers its own charm. However, these are the areas I recommend most often to couples.

The mansion is a hallmark of Planting Fields, built in a Tudor Revival style with intricate stonework and iron details. It’s perfect for couples drawn to elegant, editorial portraits. The front courtyard and side gardens catch beautiful late-afternoon light, creating a soft, cinematic look.

The greenhouse area brings a burst of color and life, especially in the colder months when outdoor foliage fades. The glass walls and lush tropical plants create a romantic, European garden feel. For winter engagement sessions, this spot keeps things vibrant and warm while offering soft, natural light.

Symmetrical pathways, sculpted hedges, and seasonal blooms make this area feel refined yet intimate. It’s perfect for couples who want timeless portraits that highlight nature’s design.

If you prefer something a bit more relaxed, the walking paths that wind through the arboretum offer quiet moments under tree canopies. These paths are ideal for candid, storytelling-style engagement photos that capture laughter and connection.

During late afternoon, the open lawns become pure magic. The soft light filters through the trees, creating a warm glow that flatters every angle. It’s often where we end sessions to capture that dreamy, glowing finale.

To photograph your engagement session at Planting Fields Arboretum, a photography permit is required. The current fee is $100, and it can be purchased in advance through the Planting Fields website or on the day of your session.

Payment is accepted by cash, credit card, or check, and you’ll need to carry your permit with you during the session. Couples love the flexibility of being able to get a permit the same day, especially if they decide on the location closer to the session date. I always recommend securing it early if you’re planning for a weekend date, as the park can be busy during peak seasons like spring and fall.

Having this permit not only ensures a seamless experience but also supports the ongoing preservation of this historic estate.
Planting Fields is beautiful in every season, but certain times of year highlight its charm even more.

The gardens are lush, and the tulips, cherry blossoms, and wisteria create a pastel wonderland. Spring sessions feel fresh, romantic, and full of life.
The estate feels like a storybook setting, with vibrant greens and golden evening light. The Camellia House provides shade and texture when midday light is strong.
Autumn at Planting Fields is unforgettable. The trees transform into warm tones of amber and rust, and the late afternoon light gives portraits a timeless richness.
Even without blooming gardens, the architecture of Coe Hall and the evergreen paths provide a classic and romantic winter aesthetic. The greenhouse adds a pop of color that feels cozy and unique.

Because the property offers such a wide range of backgrounds, you’ll want to choose outfits that complement the setting.

Comfortable shoes are helpful for walking between locations, and we’ll talk about the session in advance so we photograph the parts of the estate that match your style and aesthetic.

Lighting makes all the difference in engagement photography. The most flattering time to shoot at Planting Fields is typically late afternoon, when the light softens and creates a beautiful glow through the trees and stonework.

Morning sessions can also be beautiful, especially in the summer when the light is gentle and the grounds are quieter.

Planting Fields is consistently one of the most popular engagement photo locations on Long Island, and for good reason. It offers an unmatched combination of natural beauty and refined design, giving couples the freedom to capture both grand, architectural portraits and intimate, emotional moments in one session.

Every couple’s story unfolds differently here. Whether you envision timeless black-and-white portraits in front of Coe Hall or vibrant, joy-filled shots among the flowers, this estate adapts beautifully to your vision.
